FASTigial Study:
Speech problems after
Brain Surgery

The FASTigial study is a clinical study which investigates problems with speaking after surgery of a tumour in the cerebellum or brain stem.

About FASTigial

In this study, we are exploring factors that may be related to the development of cerebellar mutism syndrome. Therefore, we kindly ask you to complete online questionnaires about your child. We ask you to complete these questionnaires, to gain insight into neuropsychological outcomes, such as your child’s attention and memory.

Background information

Cerebellar mutism syndrome

About 25% of children who have surgery for a tumour in the cerebellum or brain stem develop cerebellar mutism syndrome. Children and adolescents who develop this condition may not be able to speak (or not speak properly) after surgery. In addition to being unable to speak, children often experience problems with controlled and precise movements of arms and legs, eating and drinking, and are often more irritable. The condition is usually temporary. Some children continue to have problems with speech and movement.

Background information

The study

The aim of this study is to learn more about the cerebellar mutism syndrome. Some children who participate in this study will develop the syndrome while others will not.  In the FASTigial study, we are investigating which factors may be related to the onset and recovery of cerebellar mutism syndrome. This will help us to understand and to improve how we treat children with this condition and might even help us prevent it from occurring in the future.

This study only collects data. The study does not affect your child’s treatment.
